it bothers me when students who write “good” essays are told by their peers or teachers that they should become writers. or when they assume that getting an A on an essay about a great novel means that they should write, too. because people don’t realize that writing isn’t about a high level of diction (some guy name hemingway proved that), and that it’s not about putting sentences in a logical order, and it’s not about having factual evidence or data to back you up.
to me, at least, the most important thing about writing is working with complex ideas that’ll bring your reader’s attention to something you think is important. it’s actually not about entertainment, though i obviously find reading (or even watching really well-written films) to be enjoyable. you need to fucking learn something or it’s not worth it. people like stephenie meyer take this for granted and teach stupid things in stupid ways and they’re the reason i cry myself to sleep at night when people say that twilight is actually “good.”
